Space Dream is a 15-page short story. In 2019, I was going through a period of important and crucial changes in my life, and I needed to rediscover the joy of creating and drawing again, almost through the innocent eyes of the child who had once been fascinated by comics and animation.
I wanted to create my first comic after a lifetime of working professionally in the arts, and for that I chose a very personal subject. My grandmother had passed away a few years earlier. During the final stage of her life, she lost almost all her memories and, with them, much of her identity. She stopped recognizing most of her family. Shortly before she died, however, she briefly recovered everything that seemed to have been lost.
This story works almost like a poem. In a way reminiscent of Back to the Future, where a car has to reach 88 miles per hour to travel through time, here a granddaughter reaches a similar speed through a dimensional portal—one she creates by building a ski slope in the middle of her own city, with her bare hands.
The portal allows her to reach the far side of the Moon, where lost spirits await their final passage into the afterlife—a concept found in ancient traditions from Greece, Egypt, India, and elsewhere.
Her goal is simple: to return her grandmother’s memories to her ghost.
This story helped me establish an initial idea of how I wanted to approach my future comics and define my first personal style.
